Meet the real Holiday Makers of Bournemouth's Seafront

The end of my first week as Artist in Residence for Bournemouth Seafront and it's safe to say I've had an amazing time.

I've had the opportunity to meet and spend time with some of the sunniest, happiest and fun people you're ever likely to meet - and that's just the staff ! Over 300 people are directly employed on the seafront to ensure that every day trip, long weekend and holiday is enjoyed and remembered by those visiting the area.

A key aspect of my residency is to develop an understanding of what it's like to work behind the scenes on the seafront and to reflect this in the final exhibition pieces I create. Roles such as 'Deckies' and Ice Cream sellers, Arcade and Cafe staff through to Cliff Lift operators, and not forgetting the fun of being up at 5am to meet with Dave the Beach Tractor driver !

From all of my conversations with the team, whether with seasonal staff or individuals who have worked the beaches for over 20 years there is a common thread that runs through the whole team - their number one priority is to ensure people have fun, lots of it, in a safe and clean environment.

Their dedication to this cause is to be applauded; every interaction with the visiting public is met with a smile and a willingness to help; no question is left unanswered and even the strangest of situations is met with professionalism and respect.

I look forward to spending more time with the team and their visitors as my residency progresses.
